The story
Nomvula, in his own break.
Nomvula picked up surfing at twelve. Her dad runs a kombi between Hibberdene and Margate and she would beg to stop at the beach on the way home from school. After a year of bodyboarding, the local surf school lent her a soft-top and a wetsuit, and the kombi never went straight home again.
Two years in, she is the most consistent grom on the South Coast — not the flashiest, but the one you can rely on to make her heats. Last season she made the final of every KZN U14 event she entered.
“I am not asking anyone to feel sorry for me. I am asking for a board.”
She needs her own equipment to keep training through the winter. The borrowed wetsuit is leaking and the soft-top will hold her back at the next level. R12,000 covers a proper 5'2" thruster and a 4/3mm steamer that will see her through to U16.
